THE WORST KITCHEN IN CHRISTCHURCH — TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY Promoter: THE NAVE LTD trading as The Nave, [NZBN], @STUDIO ARATORO PLACE, CHRISTCHURCH , hello@thenave.studio
Version 1.0, published 16th September 2026.
Agreement
By entering, you accept these terms and the Promoter's privacy policy. If you don't accept them, don't enter. These terms and the entry form together form the whole agreement between you and the Promoter about the competition.
Who may enter
Entry is open to natural persons aged 18 years or over who are New Zealand residents and who own and live in the property entered, which must be located in [Christchurch and the surrounding Canterbury district as defined by the Promoter].
Owner-occupied properties only. The property entered must be the entrant's own home, owned by the entrant (alone or with others) and occupied by them as their principal place of residence at the time of entry and at the time the prize is delivered. Rental properties, investment properties, holiday homes, properties owned by a trust or company that the entrant does not live in, flats or rooms occupied under a tenancy, and commercial premises are not eligible, however the entry is framed. Where the property is owned jointly, the entrant must have every other owner's agreement to enter it.
Where a kitchen is nominated by someone other than the occupant, the person who owns and lives in the property must confirm their eligibility and acceptance before the entry can be judged.
The Promoter, her immediate family, and any campaign partner or supplier and their immediate families may not enter. "Immediate family" means a spouse, partner, parent, child or sibling.
Entry period
Entries open at 16th September 2026 and close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 7 October 2026, New Zealand time. Entries received outside that period are invalid, whatever the reason for the delay. The Promoter's system clock decides the time of receipt.
How to enter
Entry is free. Complete the entry form at www.thenave.studio/kitchendesign including your name, email address, suburb, at least one photograph of the kitchen, and a description of it. No purchase is necessary and no payment of any kind will improve your chance of winning.
One entry per kitchen. Where more than one entry is received for the same kitchen, the Promoter will treat the first valid entry as the entry and may disregard the others. You may enter your own kitchen or nominate another person's, subject to clause 6.
Invalid entries
The Promoter may disqualify any entry that is incomplete, illegible, submitted by automated means, submitted by or on behalf of a person not eligible under clause 2, or that the Promoter reasonably considers to be offensive, defamatory, misleading, or in breach of any law or another person's rights. The Promoter is not responsible for entries that are lost, delayed, corrupted or not received for any reason.
Your promises about the entry
By submitting an entry you warrant that:
you own the property entered, alone or with others, and live in it as your principal place of residence, and any other owner agrees to it being entered;
the property is not a rental, investment, holiday or commercial property;
where you are nominating someone else's kitchen, that person owns and lives in the property, and you have their express permission to enter it, to supply their details, and to have the Promoter contact them;
you took the photographs you submit, or you have the photographer's permission to submit and license them under clause 11;
every person identifiable in your entry has consented to it being submitted and published; and
everything you have told the Promoter is true.
You indemnify the Promoter against any claim, loss, cost or expense arising from a breach of this clause. If a warranty in this clause turns out to be untrue, the Promoter may disqualify the entry or withdraw the prize at any stage, including after the prize has been awarded.
How the winner is chosen
This is a competition of skill. Chance plays no part in the result and there is no random draw at any stage.
The judge. Jo Grams of The Nave is the sole judge. The Promoter may appoint an additional judge if needed to break a tie or if Jo Grams is unavailable, and will say so publicly if that happens.
The criteria. Every valid entry is read and scored against the following, in these proportions:
Condition and functional problems of the kitchen — 40%. How badly the room fails the people using it: layout, storage, workability, safety, wear, and how long it has been that way.
The written description — 25%. How clearly and honestly the entrant conveys the problem. Humour is welcome but is not required and carries no extra weight.
Potential for a meaningful design outcome — 25%. The judge's assessment of how much difference a considered design could realistically make to this room and this household.
Willingness to take part in documentation — 10%. Whether the entrant appears willing to allow the design process to be photographed and published as described in clause 11.
Photographic quality is not a criterion. Entries are not scored on how attractive the photographs are, what equipment was used, or how tidy the room was when the photograph was taken.
The process and timing. All valid entries are reviewed after entries close. On or about 8 October 2026 the judge will select a shortlist of three entries. The shortlist will be published on the Promoter's Instagram account @thenave.studio and may also be published on the Promoter's website and emailed to entrants. By entering, you agree that your entry may be published in this way if it is shortlisted; if you would prefer not to be shortlisted publicly, email hello@the navel.studio before entries close and the Promoter will keep your entry out of the published shortlist without affecting its assessment.
The winner will be selected from the shortlist and announced on or about 10 October 2026. If judging is delayed for any reason, the Promoter will publish revised dates at [terms URL].
Finality. The judge's decision is final and binding. No correspondence will be entered into, individual scores will not be released, and the Promoter is not obliged to give feedback on any entry.
Notifying the winner
The winner will be notified by email at the address given on the entry form on or about 9 October 2026, and announced publicly on or about 10 October 2026.
Because the announcement follows the notification closely, the winner is asked to confirm acceptance by reply before the announcement. If the winner cannot be contacted or has not confirmed acceptance by the time of the announcement, the Promoter may delay the announcement, select another winner from the shortlist, or announce the result and hold the prize open for that entrant for a further [seven] days.
If the winner declines the prize, does not claim it within [seven] days of notification, or is found to be ineligible, the Promoter may forfeit that entrant's claim and select another winner on the same basis. The Promoter is not obliged to award the prize if no valid entry is received.
The prize
One prize is available: a kitchen design concept package prepared by The Nave, with a stated value of $[figure] including GST.
The prize includes:
one site visit and measure-up at the winner's property in [the defined area];
a concept layout for the kitchen;
a schedule specifying cabinetry, benchtop, splashback, tapware, hardware, lighting and finishes;
a concept presentation or board communicating the design intent;
one round of revisions to the concept, requested within [14] days of presentation;
a walkthrough of the design with the winner; and
a list of suggested suppliers and trades.
The prize does not include: construction, demolition, installation or labour of any kind; materials, fittings, fixtures or appliances; project management, site supervision or contract administration; construction or working drawings; structural, electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas or fire engineering design or advice; producer statements; any application for building consent or resource consent; asbestos, weathertightness or contamination assessment; travel outside [the defined area]; or any further revisions beyond the round described above.
Prize conditions
The prize is personal to the winner, is not transferable or exchangeable, and has no cash alternative in whole or in part. The prize relates to the specific property entered and cannot be moved to a different property without the Promoter's written agreement.
The site visit must be booked within [30] days of the winner being notified and the design process completed within [four] months, unless the Promoter agrees otherwise in writing. If the winner does not make the property reasonably available within those periods, the Promoter may treat the prize as forfeited.
The stated value is the Promoter's standard fee for comparable work at the date of publication and is provided in good faith. The Promoter gives no assurance about the value of the prize for any other purpose, including tax. The winner is responsible for their own tax position.
The Promoter may substitute any element of the prize with an element of equal or greater value if the original becomes unavailable for reasons outside the Promoter's control.
Photographs, publicity and intellectual property
By entering, you grant the Promoter a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual and irrevocable licence to use, reproduce, adapt and publish your entry — including the photographs, your description, your first name and your suburb — for the purposes of running and promoting this competition and the Promoter's business, in any media, without further notice, approval or payment. You waive any moral rights in the entry to the extent permitted by law. You are not obliged to grant this licence, but you cannot enter without it.
If you would prefer your entry not to be published, email [address] and the Promoter will withhold it from publication where it is reasonably able to do so. This does not affect material already published.
By accepting the prize, the winner additionally agrees to the Promoter photographing and filming the property before, during and after the design process, and to the Promoter publishing that material and the resulting design as a case study. The winner will be asked to sign a separate consent and release before any photography takes place.
All intellectual property in the design documents, drawings, schedules and presentations prepared as the prize remains the Promoter's. The winner receives a licence to use them for the purpose of renovating the entered property only. They may not be resold, licensed to others, or used for any other property.
Privacy
The Promoter collects your personal information to run the competition, contact you about the result, and — only where you have ticked the opt-in box — send you marketing communications. Information is held by the Promoter and its service providers and handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020 and the Promoter's privacy policy at [link].
You may ask to see or correct the information the Promoter holds about you, or unsubscribe from marketing at any time, by emailing hello@thenave.studio. Entry details will be retained for [24 months] and then deleted, except where the winner's material forms part of a published case study.
Nature of the design and professional limitations
The prize is a concept design prepared for discussion and planning purposes. It is not construction documentation and is not a substitute for advice from a licensed building practitioner, engineer, electrician, plumber, gasfitter or other qualified trade.
The winner acknowledges and agrees that:
dimensions, service locations, structural conditions and existing site conditions must be independently verified on site by the relevant trades before any work is ordered or carried out;
any cost figures the Promoter provides are indicative only, are not quotes, and are not a guarantee of what any supplier or trade will charge;
the Promoter has not assessed the property for structural adequacy, weathertightness, asbestos, contamination, compliance with the Building Code, or the need for building or resource consent, and the winner is responsible for obtaining all necessary consents and approvals;
the Promoter is not responsible for the work, pricing, timing, conduct or products of any supplier, trade or campaign partner, including any the Promoter suggests; and
the Promoter is not appointed as designer, project manager or agent for any construction work, and has no obligation to be involved beyond delivery of the prize described in clause 9.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law, the Promoter is not liable for any loss, damage, cost, expense or injury, whether direct, indirect or consequential, arising from participation in the competition, from the award or use of the prize, or from any work carried out in reliance on the design, except where that loss is caused by the Promoter's own negligence and cannot lawfully be excluded.
Where the Promoter is found liable despite this clause, its total liability is limited, to the extent permitted by law, to the stated value of the prize.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any right you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 that cannot lawfully be excluded, or the Promoter's liability for death or personal injury caused by its negligence.
Insurance and other advice
The winner is responsible for notifying their insurer of any work carried out at the property and for maintaining their own insurance. The Promoter's professional indemnity and public liability cover, where held, is for the Promoter's own benefit and does not extend to the winner or to any contractor.
Changes and cancellation
If the competition cannot be run as planned for reasons outside the Promoter's reasonable control — including technical failure, illness, natural disaster, or any event that makes it unfair or impracticable to continue — the Promoter may vary these terms, suspend the competition, or cancel it, in each case doing what is reasonable to protect entrants already in good faith. Any change will be published at www.thenave.studio/kitchendesign . Where the change is material and entries are open, the Promoter will also notify entrants by email.
Conduct
The Promoter may disqualify any entrant who tampers with the entry process, acts in a way that is unlawful, abusive or in bad faith, or attempts to bring the competition or the Promoter into disrepute. The Promoter may recover the prize or its value from any entrant who is disqualified after receiving it.
Social platforms
This promotion is run in part through the Promoter's Instagram account @thenave.studio. It is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Instagram, Meta, or any other platform on which it is promoted. Entrants release each of those platforms from all liability in connection with the competition. Following the Promoter on any platform is not a condition of entry and has no bearing on judging.
General
These terms are governed by New Zealand law and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts. If any provision is held to be unenforceable, it is severed and the rest continues to apply. A failure by the Promoter to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. The Promoter's records are conclusive in the event of any dispute about entries, except where shown to be plainly wrong.
